Nights Out For The Not-So-Normal People

October 6, 2008

So I’ve settled back in Middlesbrough now, module introduction lectures are boring. So instead of ranting on about those and how the timetables still aren’t fixed, have a guide to the three main alternative nights in the city.

First up is Sumo, the three-room fest over at Cornerhouse (under the train station). The rock / metal room room usually goes crazy during the night – it’s a small room, and it all ends up as one giant pit. It’s always hilarious when some drunken chav or indie guy walks in by mistake, and gets pulverised by the dreadlock-wielding madmen (yes, that includes you, Sean). The electro / indie room is usually quite good as well, so we’ll see ourselves veering between them over the course of the night, and it’s a long night with the club usually closing around 3-4am. Drinks are usually cheap, but they always have the music turned up way too loud and you’ll end up with your ears ringing for the next day or so, which can be annoying as hell.

The next drinking spot is The Crown, found on the intersection of Borough and Linthorpe, and it’s a bar rather than a night club. Thursday is the rock night, with free entry before 9pm, and quite cheap drinks compared to the other two places. Music usually ends up getting played in genre blocks with random indistinguishable metal until around 11pm and then it gets better. It’s more of a lazy night out, just grab a few of the sofas, talk about stuff, and chill out with some mates. Great.

For a third, I’m bringing up Metropolis over at Empire (next to the city hall) ’cause I went there for the first time last night with free entry. I didn’t feel trendy enough to belong there – the music became a little better, but they were still playing way too much generic indie crap. We would have gone to the rock room… but they hadn’t build it yet, despite advertsiing it on all the flyers. Pah. Oh, and the drinks are way expensive, not what you’d expect when you’re paying for entry as well. Don’t think we’ll be going back there, to be honest.

So, that’s that. Now let me go to sleep, will ya?

Generic Witty Title Goes Here.

September 21, 2008

I think it’s time for another one of these blog entry thingies. I’m now back in Middlesbrough and slowly waiting for my second year of University to start – Surprisingly, I’m quite looking forward to it. Hell, it beats doing nothing all the time, or lazing about and playing Warcraft. You know, be sociable with people and all that. My new house is alright, it was a bit trashy when Duong and Sheila first moved in back in July, but Python actually redecorated the place and made it bearable… but they’re still useless, because they replaced my wardrobe and didn’t put in a clothes rail. My room’s a fair size, and after a week of being here I still haven’t unpacked everything – should get round to that sometime. Once I move a bookcase in here, finish lobbing up shiny posters and give it a dust down, it should be habitable. Well, if I don’t mess it all up, that is.

Meanwhile, student life continues. Plenty of oversleeping and staying up late, watching TV (lots of new American stuff like Fringe, they managed to keep up the pace with the second episode), and leeching off my new Be* 22mb Internet connection (of which I’m only getting 8mb, because the free router’s wireless signal is kinda shitty). I managed to convince my mate and his brother than the ‘boro is, in fact, not a shithole, and I went out drinking for the first time this academic year on Thursday (and everyone seems to have lost their built-up alcohol resistance, me included). Most people are back up here now, Dave and Dan’s house is pretty close, whereas Matt and Greeny and such just had to go and live 35 minutes walk away. You hate me that much that you have to move as far away as possible? Baww. Actually, screw that, watching HD stuff on a 100″ projector screen is worth the exercise. Back here in my house, however, I’m happy with Matt (a different one) letting me play Rock Band whenever I want ^^

*edit* Fucksticks, I already used that entry title. I’m running outta shitty puns, people.

Moving An Island? Easy.

June 2, 2008

I’m not gonna criticise it, like most people have done… I actually enjoyed the Lost season finale. Yeah, so it might have gotten a little crazy when Ben went deep into the centre of the island, blew a hole in the time machine, crawled into an ice cave, turned a giant donkey wheel and moved the island, warping himself to the middle of a Tunisian desert a year or so in the future… Okay, so it got a lot crazy. But I don’t really mind that at all. I’m one of the people who doesn’t mind how absurd it gets – the intrigue and mystery is what I enjoy most about the show, and it keeps delivering. Bring on the next season!

I went back down to the ‘boro for the weekend for the Middlesbrough Music Live festival, the only people still stranded down in the halls were Matt and Sheila – I’m not complaining, although it was a bit boring with my room being completely empty and all. The festival started off good (only because half the people there were skinny scene kids… yum), but towards the latter half of the day it turned into a charv’s family day out on the main stage. There were a few drunken fights/riots, usually when the performing band started playing Pigbag… bleh. Ash were awesome live, I’ve been wanting to see them for ages now, and I managed to get on the front barrier for the whole set ^^ Apart from the whether and having to stand for 11 hours straight in the mud, a great day!

Oh, and if you were the cute girl wearing the Metallica hoody that smiled at me, let me know. You were only a few rows behind me, but I lost sight of you after The Delays finished their set… damnit. Don’t you just hate it when that happens? ¬_¬
