Animex Talk… Again!

February 9, 2009

And now for the second half of this fantastic animation and games festival, with the focus for the Thursday and Friday focusing on the animation and film side of things. Such guests included Mark Walsh from Pixar (talking about Presto!), Mark Empey from Disney Feature Animation (discussing Bolt), and Jason Sadler from Blue Sky Studios (designer for Horton Hears a Who, but more importantly, an animator on Happy Tree Friends). And don’t forget representatives from Industrial Light & Magic, Framestore, and House of Curves looking at plenty of VFX stuff. Even as a programmer, it’s still highly enjoyable for those interested in design and storytelling, so I had a good time.

The best bit had to be the 3D screening of Bolt on the Friday night, though. The stereoscopic projector got installed especially for the Animex screening, and the technology makes it look great. And with plenty of Real-D films in production (including a re-render of the original Toy Story), I guess it’s the future of cinema. We’ll see.

Animex Game… Again!

February 4, 2009

I went last year, and I’m going again this year – Animex is a fantastic animation and games festival hosted at the University of Teesside every year, now celebrating it’s 10th year… and it seems to be getting bigger and better.

Let’s see what the highlights were from the last few days worth of  presentations… the game-related headliner had to be Doug Wood from VALVe talking about the development process of Left 4 Dead – Mmm, zombies. Makes me want to play the game more, but I have plenty of work to be getting along with. Other great highlights include David Hellman talking about art production on Braid, Ian Milham from EA talking about the design of Dead Space (originally developed on the old Xbox!), and people from UDON Entertainment talking about the art of Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.

There was plenty more representatives there, including Disney BlackRock Studios, Ubisoft, Midway, Volition, and Famitsu. It was fun hearing them talk about stuff during the networking events as well, althought damn the union for hiking up all the drink prices. I’ll be back to talk about the second half of the festival later on in the week.
