Age of Conan

May 17, 2009

I tried to give Funcom’s Age of Conan a chance, I really did. Being a fan of the studio, and looking forward to their next MMO, The Secret World, I was hoping that it wouldn’t be as bad as people had said it was. I gave it the best half of a week, but when the starting zone (which people say is the best for storyline / questing) is pretty lacklustre, I don’t think I’ll continue.

It’s not all bad, I guess. The graphics are certainly pretty, and the starting city of Tortage is pretty well designed… but that’s not going to make up for the flaws. The combat system leaves me feeling like I’m just randomly mashing buttons until the enemy is down. And if one enemy gets pulled, it seems to chain pull every single mob in the area, leaving you doing another grave run, only to be slaughtered again as soon as you respawn. The quest system seems imbalanced as well – I’m trying to do quests marked as green in my quest log (under my level), but still being slaughtered because the mobs are a higher level than me. So it shouldn’t be marked as green, right? And the inverse happens as well, where I can do orange / red quests with ease. And there’s plenty of other niggles, such as the lack of a customizable UI, dialogue trees that I don’t really care about, and plenty more.

Throughout my playtime, I find myself in a constant state of confusion, thinking that there’s something I’m obviously missing.  Maybe I’m not using the combat system correctly, maybe I’m not in the right area, even though it says I should be… there’s a definite lack of structure for a starting zone that’s supposed to teach the player the ropes. So like I said in my last post, the offer still stands if anyone else wants to try the game out. Just let me know.

As for myself? Back to World of Warcraft, I guess.

Freedom!

May 15, 2009

And a month later, all my second work is done. Four modules covering Unreal Engine, Windows Forms and XNA Game Studio… I’m glad it’s all over, and I now have free time to myself. I didn’t really struggle with any of it, to be honest – I put the most time and effort into Games Software Development 2 (XNA) and still only ended up with a bare bones tech demo, but it met the assessment requirements. I’m going have to work on it some more after I refresh my C++ skills. Because, you know, I haven’t coded using it in the past 4 months. And that’s pretty bad.

I’ll be uploading my new work onto my portfolio website once it gets cleaned up… and maybe after I learn HTML properly and recode my website – It’s been something I should have learned a long time ago, but have never get around to it. Oh, and learning Photoshop properly. So I have plenty of work to keep me busy during the summer.

Oh, and lots of games. Don’t forget games. I have a big list of games to play over the summer (the link should work if you have me on Facebook). I’m also putting off the eventual re-subscription to World of Warcraft by playing Age of Conan instead. It’s alright, but it’s often a little confusing and badly structured, leaving me wondering what I should be doing next. I’ll give it a week or two more (got 25 days left on the free sub), then probably drop it. If anyone wants to play for the remaining time (and knows me), just drop me a message and I’ll give you the discs along with my account details.

Along with the odd MMO, I’ll be playing plenty of adventure games (I’m not playing Grim Fandango and The Longest Journey again this summer. I do it every summer. No.), and a crapload of backlogged DS games. Should be a laugh, methinks.
